OSCAR NOMINEES!
1/30/2006
Finally, the Academy has reignited my interest.
some comments: Best Actor: It's tough to decide between Heath and Joaquin. Joaquin WAS Johnny Cash, but Heath's acting was so subtle, so sublime, it's almost as if he wasn't even trying. But apparently this is the year of the imitation, what with Hoffman nominated for Capote, Phoenix for Walk the Line, and Strathairn for Good Night, and Good Luck. Leading Actress: I haven't yet seen Transamerica but PLEASE let Felicity Huffman win! Supporting Actress: You know I'm going to pick Michelle Williams, but only for her "Jack Nasty!" line. Art Direction: You know Kong's got this one all wrapped up. Cinematography: If you've seen the sheep herding scene in Brokeback then you know what I'm thinking, but I've only seen one other nominee. Costume Design: Probably Geisha, but should be Charlie and the Chocolate Factory because they all looked like candy. Documentary: Will be the Penguins, but if you haven't seen Murderball you NEED TO. I think Penguins should get it because it is a lovely film, but Murderball tells an incredibly interesting story. Best Picture: BROKEBACK! BROKEBACK! BROKEBACK! All of this means I need to see Crash.

Crafty, Denny, and PASTA!
I just got back from crafty night! I'm hoping next week when I no longer have a second job that I'll be able to stay a little later. I have realized I'm in much need of a hiatus from knitting. Thanks to the gal at crafty night who shared her beads, unfortunately I did not catch her name. I know that the beads came from Lyon, France, and they're very pretty.
Denny's new nickname is "Napoleon Dogomite." I hate the movie but he moved his head in a way that suggested the title character. So remember that for the next time you see him. I've been calling him Bucky, too, but just because it works. Tomorrow is pasta day! PASTA PASTA PASTA PASTA PASTA!

Schmoovecast #3: Lemonheads!
No, not Evan Dando's band, I'm talking about the delicious candy.
Topics for today include: random pop culture references, a plea for blood donations, some mess they're trying to pull at work, bad drivers in hospital zones, and a documentary recommendation. Typos are funny
I got my weekly email newsletter from my friendly local bookseller which featured the following blurb:
The 5th Horseman WOW! That's the same storyline of the book Son of a Witch by Maguire! Time to start ignoring the Frey controversy--this is a big deal! But somehow this doesn't really fit in with this series.

My mom is fantastic, filing the taxes, and podcasts
My mom called me a little bit ago to tell me that I needed to turn the TV to a certain channel to hear the finest line ever uttered in a movie. Sure enough, just moments later I hear "Nobody puts baby in a corner." Hell yeah.
I started my taxes. It isn't going to be much, but it will be enough to pay for an airplane ticket to Austin, TX. ROCK! Literally! My podcast is listed in the iTunes directory. Not a big deal, really, but I'm excited.

The healing powers of Pommery
If you listened to the schmoovecast then you are well aware that I drank a little bit of pommery pop champagne friday. if you didn't, then, well, I did. And the headache I'd had for a week was GONE the next day. hooray for champagne!
yesterday I went to visit my granny and pappy in chattanooga. aging is a harsh mistress is all I will say. Last night Mr Flash stayed over. he burrowed under the covers which freaked me out as it always seems to. Rock on.

Nashville, pasta, and boobs
I found this link today while checking my library account: The Nashville Public Library image collection. The West SIYEEED is severely underrepresented but it is still a delight to look at the pictures. There is the fire station where my checkbook was found the time I got robbed on the east side (east side reminds me of the drunk which reminds me of how things ended pretty badly which leave me feeling foolish because I was made a fool of so I cry--I've determined this is the situation, and not so much that I miss him. well, I do miss him, but I am more embarassed that I believed some stuff. but that's neither here nor there). Especially interesting are the pictures of lower Broad and how it has evolved over the years--you can even see the Robert's sign (before it was the home of BR5-49 and before my mom went there to two step and drink PBRs).
Today was pasta day. Something didn't taste right and now it isn't sitting right, if you know what I mean. Ugh. May have to skip pasta day next week, may have to make my own at home to bring in. I put on an old bra today...not a pre-op bra but a bra given to me by my sister which now is too small. My right boob kept popping out and I became afraid that they were growing back. i checked in the bathroom and sure enough, it's a cup size too small. I was getting a little freaked there for a minute. This makes two boob related posts in two days. Can I keep it up?

One More Down: The Whore's Child and other stories by Richard Russo
I don't remember reserving this book from the library, but there is was, large as life and twice as natural. I don't browse at my library, my local library is little bitty but the library system is quite large so I usually find the books and then request them. It's funny, because I may go a week or more with no books coming in from the library and then BAM! I have five waiting for me (as is the case right now). But I honestly don't remember requesting this book, I almost think they gave it to me by mistake and its rightful potential reader has some trash that I requested. Still, I enjoyed the book. Short stories are nice once in a while.

Bras, James Franco, and the crafty
I had a coupon so I headed to the Victoria's Secret to get a black bra. They happened to be giving a lipstick away if you bought their new bra. This bra is weird, it's as though it's made out of foam rubber. It is completely seamless and has no tag, so the information is printed directly on the foam rubber. Seamless means it is all ONE piece, the underwire is firmly ensconced in the foam rubber bra contraption. It also doesn't come in my cup size so I bought a band up and a cup down.
James Franco gets on my nerves, but I just can't give a good reason why. I am a Freaks and Geeks fan but he played one of my least favorite characters. And then I come home and turn the channel to MTV (don't judge me) and there's his expressionless face. I hear he looks good shirtless in Tristan and Isolde, though. Crafty night! Kate made some excellent chili but I soon abandoned my knitting to watch the Project Runway rerun on the television. Good times. Think I'm going to lay off the book signings for a while. The last two signings I've been two have left me underwhelmed. The writers didn't seem to want to be there. Maybe it's because I've not written a book but you can be doggone sure I'd be happy as can be signing my name until my hand falls off.

God's in his Heaven and all is right with the world
It was stormy on my way home from work but I managed to make it home. I made two grocery stops and nearly hit a fallen branch (which was more like one third of a tree).
First grocery stop: Pesto Tortellini and Pesto sauce. Second grocery stop: Light Alfredo Sauce and ice cream. The reason for the second is that I decided pesto sauce on pesto tortellini might be overkill. My intention was to mix a little pesto into the alfredo but...yes...I found myself too lazy to do so. The ice cream was because I wanted ice cream. So I've got a belly full of pasta, about to have a bit of dessert. I'm watching Masters of Horror, this fabulous little series on Showtime. I missed the first three episodes. It's an anthology series, each episode is directed by a different director. The one I'm currently watching is directed by John Carpenter. The episodes are all on OnDemand so I can catch up. It reminds me a little of a series I vaguely remember called "Tales of the Unexpected," or at least I think that's what it was called. Anyway, some are earnest, some are lighthearted, many have boobies.

One More Down: Not In Kansas Anymore by Christine Wicker
My mom recommended this book to me, and she knows my tastes almost better than I do.
I love that Wicker flat out states that she's a skeptic, but she retains an open mind. She participates in rituals, casts spells, and even allows herself to beocme a psychic vampire's victim. Or subject? Wicker also describes most of the folks she encounters along the way, and wouldn't you know that many of them have the long, black tresses and flowing robes? One time I went to a book signing by Silver Ravenwolf and she looked like a suburban soccer mom, which was quite refreshing. Labels: books

No, not the subject of the potty, I mean I am literally sitting on the potty typing this. Hooray for technology!
I'm completely over the sequined everyday purse. I was never really under it, to be honest. I think it's hideous, sequins don't belong in everyday dress. I'm all for big purses, but not covered in the shiny. I also don't care for Louis bags for everyday use either, but I'll save that for another day. A few comments on today's Entertainment Weekly:

Hangover without the fun night out
1/20/2006
I feel totally hung over which is funny, considering I had not a drop to drink last night. I'm out of ibuprofen so I'm stuck taking extra strength tylenol left over from my surgery last year. Needless to sy, it isn't working. I ate a little bit of chocolate hoping that if it's caffeine withdrawal (I've cut out caffeine-y sodas again and have cut down on my chocolate intake) that it would help. So far a dark room and low volume on the TV is helping a little.
I'm hoping to get well soon, I need to run by a local bookstore to get a line number for an upcoming signing. I would also like some nachos, but that's not quite so important. oh, and Gunnar Nelson? Still hot. fit club or no.

Cathy with a C, Kathy with a K
oy, am I tired. I am now home and snug in my bed. I saw Hairspray at TPAC and it was just ok. I mean, they pretty much sanitized the movie (which was pretty clean already, especially considering it was John Waters) and added songs. I wasn't too crazy about it but it was a fun way to spend the evening.
And my co-workers are insane. Seriously. We had fun, but boy, they were nuts. We had a lovely dinner at Kazu (the original choice was Panera but their lot was full and we were all in a Yukon). I might have enjoyed the musical a little more if I hadn't been sweating the whole freakin time. It was HOT in there, and my deodorant shut itself off pretty early in the day. Gross.

overheard
1/15/2006
Today I ate lunch on the campus side since today was pasta day. They are tearing down the building where I used to get paninis so they put a little place in the art building, which may not be the art building anymore now that I think of it. Back on track: they have tortellini which I love, today they had pesto which I also love. It was pretty good, but it being on the campus side and it was packed with sorority gals. Definitely a different breed of sorority gal than I am used to, but I attended a state school. So I'm eating my pasta, reading my book (more later), trying to ignore a conversation nearby but it was impossible. One of the girls was relating a story. It seems this girl, who we'll call Tammy, was cut by a certain sorority in the first round of rush. She believes she was cut due to something she said. It seems that one of the sisters asked about a high school classmate of Tammy's. Tammy replies that she never hung out with the guy, as he was Jewish and all the Jewish kids only hungout with other Jewish kids. So Tammy asks the sister what her major is? According to Tammy it's Hebrew or something so Tammy guesses she must be Jewish. Tammy figured the sister just took that the wrong way. She didn't mean anything by it! Just stating a fact!
So, then I go to my therapy appointment. I'm reading My Sister's Keeper which is so far about a girl conceived for the sole purpose of saving her sister (donating blood, marrow, stem cells, etc) she's filed a petition for emancipation. That's all I know so far. So, gent next to me asks about the book and I tell him what I know so far, and he seems disgusted. He tells me how awful the idea is and he could NEVER imagine having a child just so the other would live. He has two daughters! All this with a disgusted tone. He turns away and violently turns the pages of the magazine he's reading. As though I'm involved somehow. Rules to follow:

Ok, itunes just crashed so give me a minute to restart it... Freak Out, 311 Only When I Lose Myself, Depeche Mode Nothing Even Matters, Lauryn Hill Happy Now, No Doubt Big Head, Space Ghost This Devil's Workday, Modest Mouse The Grand Tour, George Jones Phantom Manor, Disneyland Paris Rudolph the Red Nosed Raindeer, Chris Isaak Mr Bojangles, The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band Longtime, EMF Could It Be Magic, Take That GTO, Ronny and the Daytonas Cannon, White Stripes I Can Make It, Take That Ok, so this makes me look like a massive Take That fan. Yes, I like them fine, they're one of the better boy bands out there (from the UK, where they know their boybands), but I think I only have two TT CDs. Funny.

End of weekend
Brokeback Mountain is SO good. I could've done without the nervous snickering during the first love scene, though. I suppose that's what you get in Nashville, but the theatre was probably 75% full during a matinee PLUS it was in one of the big theatres. AND it was showing on two screens.
Dirty Dancing is on right now. It was on last night. Nobody puts baby in a corner. While I'm enjoying relying on the kindness of strangers while I am carless, I am about ready to have my car back. Today my mom let me use her car but it's such a behemoth. Well, actually just a sedan, but it's bigger than I'm used to. It's so hard to park in a garage such as the one connected to the green hills theatre.

slumber party with flash
Flashy stayed over last night, Flashy being my sister's 11 lb pissant of a dog. Of course I love him. He's got this bizarre habit of crawling under the covers during the night which I find so odd. I don't mind dogs sleeping ON the bed, but under the covers is a bit odd for me. At least my crazy dreams took a break for one night. I've been having crazy dreams for the last couple of weeks. I think the subject of these dreams is what's causing my recent series of breakdowns.
I've got a couple of lazy dogs here. I'm hoping I can get a ride a little later in the afternoon, I really want to go see Brokeback Mountain but I'm not sure it's showing at one of the movie theatres here in my suburban hamlet.

One more down: Whispers by Ronald K. Siegel
1/14/2006
I found out about this book during an orientation where something caught fire, we were evacuated, and we took with us some personal belongings that were left behind. One of the items was this book. No, I did not steal it, I assume it got back to its rightful owner. Instead, I reserved it from my friendly local library. And, you know, I've been going to this library for the better part of fifteen years but I still don't know anyone's name. There is very little turnover so I should, but they don't wear name tags. One lady there, an older lady, always comments on the books I check out. This isn't really a problem because she's cool about it. She's offered to help me with knitting and even recommends books about knitting. The funniest time was once when I checked out America by Jon Stewart. My mom and I were talking about how they were not selling it at Wal-Mart due to nudity and the librarienne looked it up. She laughed.
But I digress. More library stories to come later because they're SO interesting. Siegel's writing style is somewhat lighthearted. The case studies seem to be mostly drug related paranoia which is fine, but not exactly what I was looking for. In fact, lots of cocaine based paranoia. Labels: books

I have no water
1/13/2006
Yesterday there were folks working on something to do with the water. Apparently they're still at it today. How awful to schedule a water outage on a Saturday! I'm doing what I can with bottled water, the rest I'm just avoiding. I desperately need a shower and a good hair washing, I need to shave various parts of my body, today's laundry day, I can't use the toilet (and I really need to poop). My mom told me to pretend I'm in Mexico, only in Mexico they have flushing toilets. I'm perfectly happy staying home and being stinky, but as it turns out there are a couple of stores closing in the mall near my house. If you're familiar with the part of town I live in then you know the mall nearby is a ghost mall, now two of the stores that kept people in that mall are closing. I'm going to take advantage of rock bottom prices and functioning toilets!
Ok...I just heard a shudder...could that be the water coming back on? Oh, I hope so... Nope. No water, just a trickle. I used the last little bit so that Denny doesn't have to go thirsty.

Any way, there's not a lot going on in Leah's world right now, so this is the caliber of post you're going to get. I'm not dating anyone, I don't really plan on going out much, and I am really absorbed in this book I'm reading. I will say this...there's a big show I want to go see Friday. I likely will not go, and it is for the obvious reason (for those of you who came in late, it's my former boyfriend, the Drunk). I've been looking forward to this since last May, it should be an excellent time, but I'm going to sit this one out. Been reading a lot. Not sleeping, but what else is new.

sleepy again...naturally.
I just can't sleep on Sunday nights which means I have a hard time staying awake on Monday. I've come home from crafty night, folded the laundry I'd forgotten I'd started. I've run the dog outside. I am sleepy.
When I'm sleepy I tend to see words wrong. It's often funny, but today's experience was completely random. I saw a bumper sticker that said "Go Away!!!" but in my sleepy mind it said "Go Swayze" which would be a fantastic bumper sticker. So, there's some messed up stuff on wrestling right now. All I saw was Edge and Lita (who I was a fan of when she was on a team with Esa Rios) and it became some crazy striptease type thing that bordered on obscene. Why? I feel like a parent. Now Ric Flair's involved somehow. People let kids watch this? Are Lita and Edge heels now? And now there's someone whose name I don't know. This is ridiculous. I'm going to sleep.

One More Down: Mary Mary by James Patterson
1/08/2006
You ever get the feeling you've read a book before? Read enough James Patterson and you will definitely get that feeling. Still dig it, though, when I'm looking for light reading.

Omnibus weekend in review post
It all started with dinner at the Melting Pot which was amazing as usual, King Friday. I had a Tipsy Turtle (seen to your left) which had a freakin FROND in it. Mom and I shared the Wisconsin Trio, the Big Night Out with the Mojo Fondue, and the Turtle chocolate fondue. It was all amazing but it was not easy putting away all that food. The Mojo was amazing but when we went home my sister said the garlic smell coming of us was so strong it burned her eyes. Saturday I tried to go see my former boss at her new location but she was out. The VS Semi Annual sale was awfully picked over, but I suppose that's what you get when you're too lazy to go earlier in the week! I then had lunch at Qdoba and ate a whole freakin burrito all by myself. That bitch was huge! I purchased a copy of the Postsecret book because I love the site. After work I headed to the Edgehill Studios to meet Kate for Love Drums. Also present were her boy John and crafty nighter Crystal whose boy Jimmy joined us later on. The Love Drums were great. If I hadn't been wearing such restrictive clothing I might've shaken my ass like many of the folks were doing. I hope to go to the next one, they perform first Saturday of every month. THere was a digeridoo! I've never actually seen one in person! We were hungry so we headed to PM where Jonathan, one of the drummers, met us. They have a pretty neat martini menu, I had a Lemon Grass martini which was just lovely, had a nice subtle taste to it--often these non-traditional martinis are too tart or too much, but this was just right. I had the Peanut Sauce Fondue which was absolutely delicious with the bread, but the fried tofu was a little bit too soft for me. It was also excellent with the steak fries. Today I had another fabulous lunch at Qdoba (nachos this time) and now I'm ready for bed. Good night, children. I'm going to read a little more of the new Alex Cross book. Labels: pictures

One More Down: The Traveler by John Twelve Hawks
Astral Projection! Conspiracy! Fight scenes! Romance! Intrigue! ROCK!!!
But I did really enjoy this book. It appears to be the first in a series, and the only information it has on the author is that he lives off the Grid. This book is all about the dangers of living on the Grid. Well, actually, it's about a group of folks who can project themselves into other Realms and the Harlequins who exist to protect the Travelers (the projecting folks). The Tabula have killed off all the Travelers, or so they think. I'll stop there. Labels: books

One More Down: Daisy Fay and the Miracle Man by Fannie Flagg
Flagg is adorable, and her writing is best described as adorable too. Not in a negative way, mind you. Hey, she was wearing message tees before they were cool--about 25 years before they were cool (I watched a lot of Liar's Club growing up).

One More Down: Saving Fish From Drowning by Amy Tan

This book was great. Funny, engaging, all that. Also made a good point about obsession with media, blah blah blah. Dug it. Had a hard time putting it down.

TEAM LACHEY!
I was at my parents' house and pretty much subject to watching whatever they chose. They chose Dancing With The Stars. I didn't see the first season and I really didn't care to watch this one. HOLEE CRAP. That Drew Lachey can shake it!

I really want to go to the Victoria's Secret Semi-annual sale tonight, but alas, I will probably no longer have a car tonight (I've had mom's car since Tuesday) and I'm really, really tired. Again, it's my fault, I was up late reading Fannie Flagg.
I also got to talk to Brent last night, and while that may not seem very interesting and it's so mundane I probably wouldn't mention it otherwise, I think we may start a podcast. We'll see, first I need to learn how. I probably have to get some software and definitely will have to get a microphone. I lent mine to a department at work, but it was crap anyway. Anyway, just something to look forward to in the next few months. I have officially turned in my notice at my 2nd job and I've already got a plan for after.

I'm sleepy today, but it's my own damn fault. Well, I suppose I could blame MTV, but I will take responsibility for this one. See, when they're showing the True Life with the Jersey Shore girls, well, I'm watching it. My sister and I have seen it so many times that we can recite most of the lines from memory. I realize how sad it is to admit this, but I try to hold nothing back from you, gentle reader. I feel as though we have this special bond, you and I. I think, yes, I'm falling in love with you. Am I moving too fast? I'll back off. It's just that I love you so! Don't you understand? I can't fight this feeling anymore!
Anyway, so True Life, I'm a Jersey Shore Girl was on last night. It makes me want to visit Seaside Heights and party at Merge. Between the shore girls, Tommy (who also summers in Seaside Heights), and Anthony (the bodybuilder) I think a NJ trip is in order. Why isn't MTV releasing these on DVD?

Let me know who you are
I'm going to leave this post up close to the top for a few days. please look for new posts under this one, I will still be updating.
please take a minute and click on the frappr link at the top of this page and let me know where you are and where you live. I'm always curious who reads this. the bonus of letting me know who you are will allow me to better tailor my posts to my readership. Also, if you haven't already become my official friend on myspace then click on that link too and be my friend in the realm of myspace (did I mention someone removed me as a friend? passive agressive way to tell someone to f-off. not the first time I've lost a friend, but the first time it didn't involve someone removing a profile). one thing I'm considering in this new year is podcasting. Yes, I am that self absorbed. well, to be honest it will only partially be focused on me, hopefully I can get enough people interested. when I get closer to actually being able to produce said podcast I will ask for submissions. ah, it's raining. I was going to take a trip out to cool springs to visit my former boss but I am too lazy to actually get out in the rain. plus I don't have a car and would have to get someone to tote me over there. metro busses don't run to cool springs, do they?

I KNOW A SECRET
1/02/2006
I have a secret that is killing me. KILLING ME. Oh man, and what's worse is that I can't even give a HINT. I can't even tell you who told me this secret, all I will say is it's someone in my family.
UGH. I hope word gets out so I can talk about it.

Rollergirls
I am right now watching Rollergirls on A&E and boy, am I nonplussed. When I was young I watched roller derby on TV. I spent a lot of time rollerskating at Skate Road 13 (it changed names later, it is now Skate Station Funworks) when I was a youngster. When I found out about roller derby in Austin, TX, I was pretty excited. I hoped this would catch on nationwide, bringing roller derby to my fair city.
I am not crazy about this show. It seems about as real as Laguna Beach. And they're already selling the first season on DVD. This is the premiere episode!

This is post #200.

dang, I'm super verbose. anyway, I had a few drinks last night with Rhonda and Windrow, good times. It's always fun to hang out with a few of the old slacker crew.
I got super maudlin, though. I suppose the gleemonex is not working, maybe they need to crank up the dose, or maybe even take me off of it and let me sort these things out on my own.
