    Estate sale day!

I recently found out about a new web site that lists select estate sales. Unfortunately my favorite company doesn't advertise on that site but you know what? that's ok. I get their emails. It's all fine, right?

This wall was in the basement of a beautiful West Meade home that sadly had some structural damage and puddles in the basement (likely a result of recent storms and flash flooding). Still, it was a lovely old house with one of those attics made for storing out of season clothes and housing maids.

you know what else I love about estate sales in older, established households? Finding the pencil sharpener--because there's ALWAYS a pencil sharpener! Ours was in a utility closet. This one was upstairs in a cedar closet.

Pretty much every sale had records, one had a basement full (would've spent time there but some hipsters were poring through them so had to skip that). This house had tons of times, many were indexed somehow. Every X-Files taped on VHS, meticulously catalogued. Amazing!

What the hell have I been up to???

    Oh dear. Well!
Am I still doing roller derby? Why, yes, sort of! Here is me getting pushed out of bounds by Tackle Boxxx from the Jacksonville Rollergirls. Fun fact: Tackle Boxxx was our favorite babysitter when we were kids. This is not a joke, this is the absolute truth.

Have I been anywhere interesting? Yes! Here I am with Brent at Epcot!

Am I still in school? Oh yes but barely. Is there a grad school equivalent of senioritis? Because boy, have I got it!

Do I still go to estate sales? As always! With a new obsession: amber glass!

All right! see you again in a few months!
WAit!!!! No! I say this and do well for a few weeks but I hope to update more often.

    Death in the family

I am terrible at grief, and I'm terrible at eulogizing as well. With that said, my Granny passed away during the night. Not unexpected but still very sad.

    Here are some pictures.

I meant to post this ages ago.

Back during the summer semester I did a short research paper about the Angelus Temple. It was founded by Aimee Semple McPherson and...ok, you can wikipedia it your own dang self. This was just one of the comments in a book I used in my research. It was FULL of this sort of stuff--not just allusions to Jewish ancestry but snide comments about her ministry and personal life. Honestly, it was more fun to read than the book itself. I got a decent grade, I want to say an A or B+?

    My night as a model.

Myspace does have its moments. For example, my friend Molly advised me to add xxx Salon as a friend and to subscribe to their blogs as they often would advertise special events and model calls. When I was younger I was asked to hair model once but couldn't or wouldn't for some reason. It's been a while.

My hair is particularly good for this sort of endeavour because it's never been colored (I did tint it a few times about 10 or more years ago) and it's long, a little wavy, and great to work with. It's like a blank slate, essentially, and I've been letting it grow out over the last few months while trying to find a new hairdresser and/or get some hair inspiration.

So xxx Salon did post a myspace blog post calling for hair models. It was just for cutting and they advertised that it COULD be very short or even styled in a very elaborate manner. I needed to open to bangs, layers, all that fancy stuff. I was to submit a picture of my hair and my phone number, they would confirm or release me by 4pm the same day. I had Demoyne take front and back pics and emailed them round 8am.

At noon the salon owner called me, told me I had beautiful hair, and asked me if I had any preference. I told her no, that the short might not be flattering given my round face, but I was essentially open to whatever they'd give me ("kids, it'll grow back"). I excitely shared the news with a few co-workers and tried to contain my excitement for the rest of the day.

xxx Salon is very cool. It has a great reputation in the city, is known as a very hip place, and the owner is a stylist to the stars. I'm not going to post the name in this blog. They did a great job and I have no complaints, but I'm just being discreet. I will recommend this salon to anyone, but for this post I just feel more comfortable not. Watch this space as I will likely go back.

After class I headed out and settled in where I immediately started my model-like behaviour--I drank a fifth of whiskey, assaulted an assistant, snorted a few lines, insulted everyone around me, and promptly passed out in the corner drooling and vomiting on a 10000 couture gown. Well, no, but I did some phone texting. I was brought a glass of cucumber water (told you it was classy) and settled in with my knitting.

It was to be a workshop for the staff. We looked at several pictures of runway and hairshow styles and the stylists talked about what designs to look for in the future, what people were asking for, what people didn't want. Posh's hair is referred to as the "pob." There's a new shoulder length. Stylists should not be afraid to tell the clients that the style isn't right for them. Layers look better when cut this way, rather than the other way. Modern styles reflect both 40s and 80s elements. Here's a good method to fix last season's popular style. It was a lot of information, and I learned a lot about the technical and artistic aspects of hairstyling. At one point the owner turned to me and aked if I was overwhelmed. I sure was! But it was valuable information, it will help me in the future to figure out styles that work for me.

There was only one other model, and she had a layered cut that they "fixed," and then proceeded to give her a second cut and style. I was next and was used as a blank canvas. The staff were asked what they'd do with my hair and it was debated and discussed--seriously, there were many opinions given, and decisions defended. I ended up with a nice blunt cut (seen here) that was flat ironed like crazy. Really, my hair has never been that straight. I was surprised they didn't want to do layers as EVERY time I get layers cut. I like it; it's simple and easy to care for, but has a lot of potential to be more.

I left my address and yesterday received a gift card for future services. I'll let you know how it works out when I go back.

    Dinner on the East side

The East side is home to tons of amazing restaurants, but on Sundays I like to spend my evenings dining at Mimi and Cricket's. They make amazing meals for a large group of folks, I consider it an honor just to be invited. They are also very smart ladies, as the picture suggests--this hangs on their fridge. You probably can't read it, but a google search led me to this site, where you can read the text.

    Derby injury

My first injury! And how! I was skating in a drill and all of a sudden I'm airbound, landing mostly on my face, my glasses flying into the fray. one of the first things we learn in derby is how to fall, but "on the face" is not a preferred way. I notice that my face is bleeding, apparently in the process my glasses broke, causing a tiny cut near my eyebrow. If you've ever had a cut near your eyebrow you know that it's going to bleed profusely. It did, scaring the heck out of everyone (me included).

One girl told me that boxers get hit there all the time. One told me that I was the first girl to spill blood on our track, thereby making it officially "ours." Our male ref came over terrified by the sight of the blood, thinking I had lost a tooth. One girl ran over with a camera to get a picture--before you think she's cruel know that I requested this (perhaps I will post it later).

There was a bit of an arguement, as yet another girl ran over with an antique first aid kid, telling us that it dated back to WWII (I think), which concerned someone who thought that the items within would be outdated; luckily only the box was antique, the first aid items were new. I was informed that there was a book in the kit that told us how to do sutures with a needle and a strand of human hair, but I was glad that this was not necessary.

One of our girls is an RN so she took care of things. Most girls just get interesting bruises. I get a nifty scar.

Damn. Look at that eye. Do you see a crow's foot? Do you see a bag? Hell no. This is what 31 looks like, bitches. Don't hate.

    My kind of store!

Ok, I'm giving up. I mean it this time! Giving! Up!

The day started in the 9am hour. of course I wasn't up late the night before. I actually got tons of sleep, but when a telemarketer (yes, I am on the Do Not Call list, so this must've been one of those loophole situations) called I was up. Might as well get going, right? And there were estate sales to be visited! One in a neighborhood I love, the other the estate of an antiques dealer. These would be great.

Oh no. The BD estate sale was in a great neighborhood, had great stuff, and I walk in the room and zero in on a table piled with old polaroid land cameras and equipment. This is my kind of thing, right? Only I look at the prices and gasp. They want me to pay $50 for a 210. Go look on ebay for a polaroid 210. HELL NO. I could tell it'd been in storage for a while as it had that weird scummy feeling to it. You know, kind of fuzzy and ever so slightly stinky? Right. No. They had a few movie cameras (8mm and the like) but the sticker shock I had from one ($100!)
left a sour taste in my mouth so I had to leave.

LeeAnn's sale was much more my speed. It was the antique dealer's house, and while I couldn't afford much of it (it was very nice stuff--yes, antique dealers do keep the best stuff for themselves) I did pick up a couple of books. It was crazy packed in there. I was happy for LeeAnn, bringing in big crowds. See, BD usually has the high profile sales but considering her recent turn to crappy sales with too-high prices I am on team LeeAnn.

I also found the time to stop at the triumvrate of rack shops--Ross, Marshalls, and TJ Maxx. I nearly fell to my knees in praise of the deity who smiled upon me; I found pants that actually fit! Also low top chucks and some cute slip ons. It's stuff like that that keeps me going and makes me forget the many times I've waded through polyester Bill Blass crap.

Meanwhile, Denny's getting clean. Dang time for it too, I forget how soft his fur is until he gets a good scrubbin'.

The night ends with a movie with the sister--Knocked Up. This was all we could agree on. We don't get to movies with each other much so I took it. I came home hoping for an SNL rerun. No such luck, so it was early bedtime for me and the dog.

    Hot music in the Acres!

Divorcee Acres isn't the hippest part of town. I do like it, it has a small town feel to it but I'm just 15 minute drive from town, 20 minutes from the irritatingly hip East Side. The neighborhood is young families on their way up, retirees, and, of course, divorcees. Within three miles are a grocery store, a library, a locally owned pizza joint, and my parents. It's a good location if not exactly a cool location.

So there's also a park nearby, just a scant mile from the house. During the summer they have a concert series with family friendly shows, and often I can hear the shows from my front porch. Recently I commented to my parents that the acts are good and all, but why not have a nice rockabilly band? They assured me there would be one, but I didn't expect it would be THE HILLBILLY FREAKIN CASINO. Yes. Them. Less than a mile from my house. This would be the coolest thing to hit the Acres this year and I made sure that I would be there. Not that that would be a stretch, as I'm not
    a big socializer these days.

Dad and I grabbed sandwiches and took the dogs and our portable chairs over to the park early enough to get a good seat. This was not a problem, and I was a little upset that that there wasn't a bigger turnout--the more folks that showed up the more likelyhood that the coolness would be revisited upon the Acres.

Little drama before the show, however. As I mentioned, we took the dogs. Since there weren't a bunch of folks around I just kind of let the dogs wander as far as their leashes would allow, and at one point looked to see Flash over peeing on a lady's purse. Unfortunately the lady also happened to be walking back over after a visit to the SnoCone stand. She freaked, understandably, but was very polite about it. I did offer to replace the purse, she declined. Dad wanted to leave but like hell, I was staying.

The band rocked the park. They were fun, and they did a great job of keeping it family friendly (I was a tad concerned). They even played my request (PBR if you're asking). Dad enjoyed it. Denny sure as hell enjoyed it, barking his approval on a few songs and wagging his tail like crazy. He made friends, getting an ice cube from one couple and a good scratching from another gentleman who allowed a few doggie kisses. Flash--well, he spent time in my lap. He gets a little scared by loud noises.

If they come to your town or you happen to find yourself on Lower Broad late one Friday night I highly recommend, and bring your tippin' money.

Here's hoping for the same next year...

You have got to be kidding me

You may not be able to see this very well. for some reason blogger likes to make the images smaller than my camera makes them. It is today's entry on my stitch n bitch page a day calendar. Mondays are "Fave Fiber" days, today's entry is Lion Brand Fun Fur Stripes.

Excuse me? No. I won't have it.

Lion Brand Fun fur is DISGUSTING. It looks ok but is absolutely awful to knit with and just feels creepy. In addition any person who picks up a couple of skeins and needles makes one up and fancies him/herself an entrepreneur. Therefore you can't hit your run of the mill craft fair without tons of fun fur scarves. Fun fur scarves which are overpriced considering you can buy one of those "Magic Scarves" for half the price, only the Magic Scarf is a bit more sturdy and knitted in the round allowing you to do all kinds of crazy stuff with it.

Oh, and the flip flops! i have three pair currently: two made with some kind of eyelash (this is what some people call Fun Fur) I got at the yarn store, one made with Lion Brand Fun Fur. The two with the other eyelash look rather nice--the fur isn't outrageous, the colors have held. The Lion Brand Fun Fur--well, no. not so much. Faded color, too fuzzy. Ech. Again, a craft fair staple. I've made them for friends, shown the process to the crafty group, and that's it. They take barely any time to make and require very little skill, so you can probably make them for half or less than half what you'd pay for them.

I've got some copper Lion Brand Fun Fur that my mom bought from a fellow choir singer who had surplus, it's still sitting there with the needles still in it. I won't finish it, it's just such a pain. I should state for the record that I love novelty yarns. In fact, I very rarely buy normal yarns because I just love the result you can get from them (plus they cover a multitude of mistakes). But Lion Brand Fun Fur is just different. It takes all the fun out of knitting with eyelash yarn.

All dressed up and lots of places to go

So, I live in Tennessee. Living in TN means freaking out at the first sign of snow. We get a light dusting and PANIC.

So this morning I was due to drive to Memphis for a baby shower honoring young Holden the Guy. I look outside--snow. I don't think much of this, but then I look at the state highway reports and see that past Jackson there's some ice. I decide it's better that I not go. I fall back asleep, knowing that Jesse the Guy is probably not yet awake so I go back to sleep for a couple of hours intending to call in my regrets. During this time I have the television on MTV where they're showing a marathon of their stellar programming, in this case it's My Super Sweet Sixteen and Underage and Engaged (or vice versa). I drift in and out of sleep not knowing which part is on television, which part is my dream, and whether or not my mom really did tell me that Britney shaved her head overnight and got some tattoos.

You may be asking how my mom scooped me on entertainment news? Good question. She's never even looked at Perez Hilton.

Anyway. I also have not one but five (that I can recall) dreams where I get up, go downstairs, call Jesse the Guy and get on with my day. I hate that. by the time I actually get going it seems so DONE. you know what I mean? BUt I do eventually call Mr the Guy who fully understood, and I do intend to visit Memphis in the next few weeks to visit little Holden.

So I do my grocery shopping where I buy lots of sweets and some necessities. I catch up on DVRed stuff, good times, right?

So the time comes to get ready for Kate and John's engagement party. I debate going. I'm excited to go because I really do like Kate and John and am very excited for their impending wedding but the roads are not so good and the snow continues to come down. Basically, the later it gets the worse the roads will get. I take my shower, shave the parts that ladies do, clip my frikin toenails even, and hit the road. While the road doesn't really hit back, it does throw out a gentle insult that made me rethink everything I know. So I slip a bit, pull over, call in more regrets, and head home.

And here I am. THe picture above was taken of me in my engagement party finery.

Also, more pictures added to my flickr account, including a couple of pics from before the very first nashville rollergirls interleague bout.

How did you spend your valentine's day?

I started the day getting ready for some screen printing. After a few false starts I ended up in my dark room (it's actually my laundry room outfitted with two special lamps--one high wattage, one with a red bulb) burning the screen for Michelle's shirts.

A call from my boss let me know I had flowers at the office. See how pretty? Thank you, Steve!

I have this tradition, I meet Ginger for bowling on Valentine's day. It started many years ago when we found ourselves single and not wanting to deal with the day. We decided to take the day off and bowl. That way we knew that we'd have an amazing day no matter what. Of course, Ginger outbowled me as she does every time we bowl, but that's ok.

I then headed over to order new skates. New skates! I'm so excited! Next week...

Then art store for more printing ink.

Crafty night was at Kazu this week. I said we needed to have it there every single week. Seriously, it's a great place for it.

My last stop was at Steve's, he's under the weather so I took him some soup.

Finally, I printed Michelle's shirt and burned the screen for Molly's birthday tee. Her birthday was October so I'm very on the ball.

I'm going to bed, goodnight y'all!

So I went on a mini-spree at Target spending some of the Christmas money. I finally, FINALLY own a sewing machine. I also have elbow knee and wrist pads, a mouthguard, and knee socks so all I need to start roller derby practice is a helmet. hurray for roller derby! I also have some holiday wrapping paper which is GREAT since I used the last on Dr Gay's gift. It lasted a long time.

Right now I've got ice cream a crankin. If it works out it'll be chocolate thin mint ice cream.

How much fun is THIS? an ATM! actually, this provided the first drama of the evening as it wouldn't take my card, the son of a bitch

It should be known that I like Billy Graham. He's been in the public eye for a very long time and has remained scandal free (wikipedia has informed me that he's not completely above reproach--see the link below for some controversies he's been involved in). So I was going to kneel in prayer but the rocks around the statue are sharp so I ended up humbling myself a little bit more than I intended.

    Superstar!

Dr Gay is moved by the spirit.

Some info from Wikipedia: Billy Graham is a Southern Baptist who left Bob Jones University because it was too fundamentalist. He is a registered Democrat who votes for who he considers right for the job at the time.

GENERALISSIMO FRANCISCO FRANCO IS STILL DEAD!

It makes sense that I was born on the day of an event that sparked a Saturday Night Live running gag.

Does that sentence even make sense? Because my b-day dinner took place at a restaurant that has half price bottles of wine on Mondays. We ALL know what that means.

Thank you very much to Dr G for the tattoos! Thank you OOLSamantha for the package. I love them both, and they complement each other, almost as though it was planned. Angi et famille, thanks for the disco ball, I love it! I will watch the mail--congratulations on the new house! I can't wait to see it and the family and Rosebud, hopefully in the fall. Rhonda, I love the card, as I love cheese more than almost anything. Thx to those who called and texted and myspaced bday wishes.

NEWAYZZzzz, this has been a most fergalicious birthday, thanks to all who made it so. I'm sure I left someone off. I'm a little tipsy. A lot tipsy.

Here's a cute dog pic to express my thanks.

    More east side fun

Back to the same ole estate sale and a couple of garage sales. good times! scones!

Ok. So the estate sale wasn't on Electric Ave, but it was on the way sort of.

THis isn't the estate sale either.
I've never thought about whether or not it's cool to take pics at an estate sale, but it should be. I didn't get any pictures of the house itself. I bought some stupid crap, then on to other sales.

Then, good times, on to the zoo! I had to pick up my membership gift and then Dave and I headed straight over to the lorikeets!

I will name them Randal and Dante!

    Sweet nothings.

    printing for YOU

In addition to the trex shirt I am offering a few others for sale. They are available at pretty low prices, will depend on how many are ordered. You pretty much pick the color tee you want, size, and ink--again I can give you details depending, just contact me comanche dot red at gmail dot com, but price should be around $7-10. I'll be placing the order later this week. If you want to know what colors are available check out American Apparel. If you want undies or a tote that's also a possibility.

This one is not family friendly. It's printed in black ink on black tee, and you can see that it's pretty neat looking.

This is the jolly roger design on a black tee done with discharge paste. Discharge paste essentially takes the color out of the fabric. I've never discharged american apparel clothing but it works better on 100% cotton which they offer, luckily for you! Boobs not included.

    GHOSTS!

    WOOOO!

Ok, here's the story. Madame Mandy is my ghost story friend. i like to hear ghost stories, especially true ones, she likes to tell ghost stories, especially true ones. I was dismayed that I had missed every bit of a Scariest Places on Earth marathon, which means another year for me to forget that the family channel does this every year.

So we've been meaning to take a ghost tour around town for some time now. IT seems that Carnton Plantation has a ghost tour a few times a year. I really wanted to take this because the house was used as a Confederate hospital during the ultra-bloody Battle of Franklin and with all that energy there had to be good stories. Sure enough, there were. Over the course of two hours we toured the house and the cemetary and heard stories both touching and terrifying.

None of my pictures really turned out that well. There's this one and a couple of polaroids but nothing at all spectral.

It should be noted that I don't believe I've ever had a ghost encounter. There are stories that some may consider as such but I have written them off as tricks of the mind or that sort of thing. Certainly nothing full on when I'm in full consciousness. This is why I love hearing ghost stories, especially from people who I believe to be credible (like Mandy).

Anyway, feel free to send me real ghost stories if you have them. Like I said, I really do enjoy hearing, or in this case reading, them.

My halloween costume will be me circa 1993. No joke. I still have this crazy hideous dress I lived in most of senior year, plus my green docs, plus this gigantic green cardigan I pretty much wore every day from 8th or 9th on through graduation.

    Art for young people

So straight from the Plowhaus to the Parentshaus to pick up the purse which my mom had lined for me. Sparkly and shiny! I didn't finish the matching scarf, it was too short and I didn't have time to try over. I used to work with the little girl's mom and am now a classmate of the girl's dad. I've been to each of her on-campus birthdays since year 1 and now we're at year 4. Good times, hope she likes the purse.

Oh, the blue tape on the finger is due to a cut I suffered at the Day of the Dead workshop. No bandaids so I grabbed a chunk of butcher block paper and some blue masking tape to stop it.

    art for dead people

East Nashville means many things: good music, scones, armed robbery, food, and hipsters. Oh, and Plowhaus Artists' Cooperative. Good times. It's Day of the Dead time. See the picture? I made that. Why is it a crappy camera phone picture? Because right now as I type it's over hanging on a wall at Plowhaus. No, it's not in the gallery proper, it's in the workshop space/gift shop, but hey, it's a first. All workshopees were invited to hang finished pieces. Better pictures to come once I pick it up tomorrow, tonight is the opening party. If you live in Nashville and you don't go see this exhibit you are stupid. It's beautiful.

Oh, and the scones. Oh, the scones. Before I made it over there I stopped at the delightful Sweet 16th for a sack of scones. They had to put them in special lead bags because otherwise they'd float right out the car window. I'm going to compile a list of how to spend a day in Nashville, and that's #1. Yes, I did get doggie biscuits too.

AND before that an estate sale. Wow. Samantha, if only you had been there--lovely vintage dresses all over. Mom said this woman was talented at the textile arts as her handmade garments were beautifully made. Of course, the zippers needed replacing, but such things happen. We're talking delicate, beautifully made items. One hand made linen evening dress had STAYS. Handmade stays! This was in Old Money Meade in a house with a huge basement and a magnificent attic. I picked up a flawless vintage cashmere sweater (it will be sold on ebay later on) and a nice 8mm Brownie camera which may or may not work, but it at least looks cool.

Also, in case you hadn't heard, there is a certain ad by the RNC that is really, really insipid. Ok, there are a few ads by the RNC that are insipid, but one in particular is drawing national attention. See, in it a young blonde asks HFJr to call her. The complaint is that this commercial is specifically meant to piss off those who disapprove of interracial relationships.

I'll shut up one of these days, but not today!

My friend Sal is a Libra. She celebrated her birthday all during the sign of Libra, which ended yesterday. You know what started yesterday? Scorpio did, bitches! That's me. No, I will not be one of those who goes on and on about her birthday, I've done that in years past and have only set myself up to be let down. I'd love to be like that but so many of my friends are scattered by the seven winds (ok, sorry, won't happen again, you are well familiar with my terrible poetry, and if not, good). So I'll be content with the fact that I've almost lived thirty one years and I've got good people.

So the point is I voted yesterday. And i joined the local YMCA, which is excellent.

So here are some pictures I took with two different polaroid cameras:

I am loving the polaroid cameras

Maybe one day I'll stop blogging about this, but these cameras make me so happy.

This little thing is growing up through my deck. Mom says it's going to be an oak tree, I say not so much, but she is urging me to pull it up before it cracks my condo's foundation. I say I'll probably be out of this condo before that happens.

When I showed my neighbors the picture they liked it, and I told them what mom said about the tree/foundation, and then what I replied (you know, about being out of the condo and all?). They understood this to mean I was moving. No, just that trees take a long time to grow and I'll probably be no longer in this world.

    Updated Afternoon Notes

    >

    • Dr Gay wants a pupusa. Will someone take care of that for me, please?

    • I saw a guy trying to rob an exxon. I was at my car at a busy street corner and saw a dude walking out with two half cases of beer and a 12 pack of pepsi. he then started to run, then dropped them, and then was stopped by a police officer.

    • Making some shirts, see dino image over there. If you want one, holler. shirt and ink color are negotiable, please email me if interested. Price will be pretty low, will let you know when I order. It depends on how many. They'll only be offered until the end of october, so get on it. comanche dot red at gmail dot com.

    • This morning we participated in a breakfast with the University Chancellor. I did not get to ask my question during group discussion time so as we milled around before he left I asked him something about evening/weekend classes, it's really not important. Then he tells me that my last name is common in Utah, and that it is a common Mormon name. i honestly had no idea, but this is the sort of thing I'm quite interested in given my fascination with mormon missionaries. So should I start a new life as a Mormon gal my old testament first name combined with my last name and my giant teeth should allow me to fit in most nicely. I fear, however, that I will be betrayed by the fact that I am neither blonde nor am I particularly cheerful or friendly. I suppose I should mention that out Chancellor is a Mormon from Utah, which explains why he commented on it.

    Puppies!

YEsterday and today I am in class learning some stuff. I'm at an offsite location and my class starts later than work normally does. this means a trip to the east side for delicious scones and other baked goods. Oh man. You have no idea how amazing these are. Amazing enough that I'm giving up a little bit of sleep to drive about a half hour to get them. Wow.

The puppies (and momma doggy) were in the back seat of the car next to me at the place where class is happening. I want one so bad, I'm tempted to leave a note with my number on it. They won't get too big, maybe a little bigger than flashica but not much. Right now they're so tiny that their eyes aren't open and mommy is still licking their little puppy privates so they'll go potty.

Oh, the Gocco is worth every penny

Every penny. I started printing the calendars this evening. Some of them aren't as inky as I would like and I had to reink more frequently than I thought, perhaps I'll post more detail later. I do like them though, but I like that photocopied kind of look. And I highly recommend Judy at Northwood Studios. I'm so excited! I've already got an idea for some prints, rock on.

Oh, and I have to bring this up. When I see commercials for Sex and the City on basic cable channels it just annoys me. See, I've seen every episode, and I spent many girls' nights watching this very show. Looking back it was terrible. In fact, I kind of knew when I was watching it it was terrible. Friends is the same way.

    minty fresh

Today I smell like your grandma. Not MINE, one smells like avon products and the other smelled of Youth Dew dusting powder. My neck is bothering me like crazy. I tried to put off taking the muscle relaxers but may be forced to tonight. After i make a teeny pizza. It won't be the same without the spinach, which I threw away. I mean, I'd already eaten half the bag, but I got tired of my mom bugging me.

I had a horrible thought today: I can only be a mom if I can be assured that I will have cute children. I was a cute child (ahem, ahem, ahem, and again ahem) even though adulthood hasn't been so kind to me. Still, look at all that red hair. Any proposals of marriage must be accompanied by baby pictures. I insist.

Still no sign of the gocco. i'm getting antsy!

    Hot.

forgive the sidewaysness of this pic. I've had this recurring neck muscle spasm issue for years. It mostly went away after some physician-type intervention, and completely went away after the reduction surgery. But now it's back and better than ever (assuming, of course, my neck pain is a Liza-esque balladeer).

Long time readers of this blog will remember a car accident last December (and short term readers can just go look in the archives) which resulted in some neck strain. i'm wondering if this kicked it off again? It has only come back once since then, that was more related to a weird sleep position.

the other night I hit my head while getting into my car. I hit the right side but could feel it in the left lower jaw area. did this kick it into high gear?

It starts in the neck and radiates up my face stopping at the left top of my head above the temple. It was so bad in a meeting yesterday that my boss thought I was sulking. no, it was just so bad and those crazy faces and dropping my head into my hands (where I was giving it a small massage unseen from her side of the table) are the only way I can get a little temporary relief.

That and heat. Unfortunately my rice filled sock is at home, all I have is this ginormous Therma Care which makes me look so damn fine, like a senior citizen. Prescription muscle relaxers help, but those are at home and really not an option for workday use.

Oh, and add to this a minor health scare this morning. you know those things that if they happen you're supposed to alert your physician? One kind of happened this morning. Brief but scary. It's one of those things that could be completely benign or completely dangerous. Not related to muscle spasms.

    Crafty Corner: Discharge Printing

Is that what you call it? At any rate, I bought some discharge paste some time ago because I really just wanted to see how it worked. I never take a class and I never read a book all the way through, I read just enough to do what I need to do at that point and then wing it the rest of the way through the process.

Discharge paste not only has a disgusting name, it also has a disgusting smell and a disgusting consistency. You can use it the same as you would normal printing inks, and when it's dry you run an iron over it. It literally disappears before your very eyes. It's pretty cool, like those color changing cups and straws that you get at fast food places. Being the half ass I am, though, I didn't follow instructions. I read wrong--I thought I was supposed to STEAM the paste out, so after much frustration I reread the instructions and realized I was supposed to steam IRON.

I'm really pleased. Really, really pleased. The shirt in the picture is 100% cotton, but I also tried it on a poly cotton blend I happened to have (read: made a mistake printing on and kept around for experiments) and while it didn't do as well as the cotton it still did work.

But the name, when combined with the consistency, is just awful. I propose we rename it "color removing magic goo."

    Weekend in review

I did not let my sniffles get the best of me.

Mom and I went out Sat morn to try the estate sales. I really just wanted her to see the house over in Charlotte Park. the one built in the 50s without many changes to the decor. We looked at the sewing machine (didn't work quite as well as we'd hoped), I noticed that the vibrator HADN'T been sold, so I took a couple of pictures.

In addition we hit a neighborhood garage sale. I got some odds and ends, most notably another fondue pot. This one actually has instructions nd is a bit newer. Let the fondue parties begin!

I then headed over to Stevo's birthday but on my way decided I couldn't wait another moment and got in the queue for new tires. In between I stopped by, bid Stevo a happy birthday, and headed back to get the new tires (they're lovely, by the way).

I ended the evening by stopping by the Wash for brie and cannolli, then to the tres crow for Glossary and the Carter Administration. Both rocked the house, and I had fun chatting and seeing people I hadn't seen in one hundred years.

The pirate shirts are a hit, by the by. The screen probably won't last too much longer.

I did spend a little too much time in smoky bars so I'm paying for it today. Still, it was worth it to see some excellent music.

The shoe pictures--just like I promised.

It's another Saturday night at home, and that's just fine with me. So here are the pictures of the shoes I bought on my estate/garage sale extravaganza with mom.

Sort of espadrille-ish thing. This pair hadn't been worn. There were three pair...

...so I bought two of them. The third pair were navy. When the hell do I have need for navy shoes, I ask you?

My mom loved these, and I love comfortable slippers and so here we are. Oh, I might add there were some lovely hats still in hatboxes. I am not really a hat gal and the hats were too dressy for me ever to wear. However, one hat had a semi-asian feel to it so we were treated to some racially insensitive humor courtesy of a mother and her young child. The children are our future.

Yes, that IS the box they came in. This lady kept a well organized closet apparently. She also kept an immaculate house. I really wanted this dinette set she had, but I love the one I have. Oh, and an antique sewing machine. Lovely.

If you can't see this picture, please go here to see them. I don't know what's going on with the code.
This brings us to the last sale we visited. Walked away with these lovely hand painted Dr Scholl's. I have a pair from the same store that I got at a crafty night clothing swap. They're pretty pricy. I got them at $5 a pair. That's essentially a 97% discount if my math is right. They're cute and all, but they're a size bigger than I wear and they kind of tear up my feet.

Flashy checks out the other pair from the same sale. I also got a fondue pot at this particular sale.

    Grad School

I didn't want to consider it official when I submitted my application. I had academic issues that would eliminate me.

Then I didn't want to consider it official until I got my acceptance letter. Even though during the interview I got the definite impression I was in.

Then I didn't want to consider it official until I turned in my acceptance statement. Even though that was only a minor hurdle.

Then I didn't want to consider it official until I was registered in my class. Well, I'm registered now.

I won't consider it official until my first class. But I'm going to start school in less than five weeks.

What an odd couple of days it's been

Right now I'm watching the final scene of Dirty Dancing which is, in my mind, better than any glass of wine. Nobody puts baby in a corner!

So yesterday was just peachy. I mean, there's some wacky stuff going on at work, but it's all systems and work specific stuff and that's really not what I'm here to talk about. So I come home to a cable free household. As in nothing at all. No cable, no internet, none of it. Luckily I have about a zillion hours of DVR-ed goods so I caught up a little. I'm below 70% full right now! Of course, it'll fill up again tonight, but we move on. So I made my appointment and woke up to a cable free morning. Nothing. Nothing at all. I couldn't even watch the terrible morning show that I need to blog about sometime.

Today I move my cable appointment. Since it's a same day thing they can't give me a set time, I only know that they'll give me a 30 minute warning. I wait patiently for the phone to ring. Aside form a few family and friend calls: nothing.

But on the way home I decide to run a couple of errands. First is the bank where I, uh, do some banking. Next stop was a little bit more interesting--the library. Not so interesting in itself, but outside was the sweetest, most patient choco-lab. She was sitting so nicely I thought for sure she had to belong to a library patron. After waiting about ten minutes and calling the owners (she did have a collar and tag) I realized she had just gotten away from home. A quick check in the library revealed that this wasn't the case, this sweet gal had made her way across a busy intersection on more than one occasion. I did make a quick call to the home (no answer) and since the little lady had already jumped in my car once I decided to take her home. She was a true sweetheart and I was very sad--I mean this great doggie is out in high nineties temperatures? I wanted to take her home but I knew that was out of the question. So when I dropped her off (no one at home) she stood on the porch and watched me leave. Sigh.

So the cable dude eventually calls and shows up a couple of minutes later. It was a simple disconnect--or disco, as they say in the biz. When the cable came up it happened to be on MTV which happened to be on a rap countdown. After signing, surveying, and testing the tech asked me if I liked rap, if I knew rap, blah blah blah rap, so I said no, I don't deep up with it, it just happened to be on that channel. Apparently he'd spent some time at some up and comer's house setting up something cable related. I then told him about a co-worker's husband (also a cable tech) and how he did some work for some member of KISS. I suppose this was cable dude's cue to move out fast because he was gone within 30 seconds of me finishing the story.

    Anyway, Flashy's here. It's hot. I'm sleepy.

Meet Milo: The end of the dog picture trifecta.

This is Milo, my favorite neighbor is taking care of him for someone. Milo is super cute, super small. He's a miniature pinscher, but he's the runt of the litter so he's a min-min-pin.

Let's go surfing now, even Flashy's learning how.

To celebrate the birth of our country, the US of A, I headed to Ginger's for good times poolside. Flashy is no stranger to water so he was placed on a raft. He did eventually jump off the raft and swim like the dickens over to me. He didn't seem to mind the water but was in no rush to get back in. All was fun until Ginger's little dog Sarah decided to exert her dominance over Flash. Oh, and the in-pool roughhousing concerned Denny a little bit.

It was then over to the parents' for burgers and banana pudding. God bless us, every one.

    Happiness is...

...sitting outside at dusk at a Drakkar Sauna show drinking a gimlet (Tanqueray, of course) watching a cluster of balloons float into the sky. Oh, and there was a nice breeze too.

    Aah.

    Random pictures pour vous.

I don't know what to tell you about this, but I saw it in a local antique shop. I was really, really tempted to buy it but if I remember correctly it was too pricy to buy. I believe it's a gent killing a polar bear, the polar bear having recently killed a seal. Circle of life, indeed.

This rabbit was sunning him/herself right next to a busy sidewalk. Awww.

My neighbor made this boat out of Milwaukee's Best beer cans, he is one of my favorites in the whole world.

    Let's catch up, shall we?

I've been sick. No excuse. But here's the rundown:

Thursday I stayed out of work due to illness. I am being hit by allergies something fierce. I slept most of the day and woke up Friday morning feelig a little better. It didn't last very long and I ended up leaving work early. I stopped and got some benedryl (and easter candy! the best holiday based candy across the board!) and came home and slept for a few hours. I woke up with dry sinuses and a take on the world feeling. I thought I was well enough to venture out and see my very favorite band Drakkar Sauna, so off I went. Of course, when I got home I realized I was wrong, WAY wrong, and slept horribly. However, Drakkar Sauna is amazing so I was glad I went.

So Saturday was Sally's garage sale. Lindsay picked up some cute clothes. We decided to stop in the sleepy hamlet of Berry Hill for some vintage clothes shopping. Such a surprise when we found that there was a neighborhood wide garage sale going on! Being sick and mostly sedentary my energy ended FAST, but not before a stop at my new favorite bead store. Yay! And a little Qdoba and Target. Then home for another nap.

After another nap it was off to the southside for nascar and whiffleball. Good times! The dogs got along well with Ginger's dog Sarah. Everyone else wanted grilled meats, but all I wanted were some real, REAL tacos. They ended up coming from a taco stand that used to be a gas station/convenience store.

And now I'm watching So Notorious, possibly my favorite new show. Other than that, today there will be more of this...

    Storm damage

So, you may have heard there were some storms in the central tennessee area. If not, tornadoes killed 11 people in the state last friday. This is on top of the twenty something who were killed by tornados a little over a week ago.
My sister happened to be in the area and on a drive after the storm (no, she was not rubbernecking, she was on her way somewhere.

    SOLD!

Ok, no one wanted the blasted elephant earrings but I DID sell my rose quartz necklace. Of course, it was my mom who bought it, but still, YAY! I even threw in a pair of matching earrings.

Here's the newest thing I've made. Goes well with the spring green, right? And it's got the added bonus of MAYBE containing dinosaur DNA. So, right now I'm selling anything for pretty much the cost of materials and then a couple extra dollars on top of that.

From the West Nashville Charlotte Salvation Army store

Be Your Own Pet is a local band. I've never heard a note of their music, they've got a local reputation I won't get into here (most of what I've heard came from an ex-boyfriend). So there's this CD at the local SA family store with the following post-it attached. Curious to know how it ended up there, but not being an empath it will have to remain a mystery. And no, I don't remember the name of the band (Young something or other?). Sorry. It's probably still there.

    Reads:

    Noisy Brit Art-Punk
probably what Be Your Own Pet
    would like to sound like.
    Decent, but not all that
    enjoyable because of its
    amelodic nature

Schmoovecast #14: Suck my zoloft, Reese!

I made this necklace! Anyway, Reese Witherspoon sucks, Zoloft is all right, Project Runway ends not with a bang, but with a whimper, and I'm tired. might not should've podcasted. Music courtesy of music.podshow.com, it's The New Autonomous Folksingers--Glass of Wine.

    It's ash wednesday

I hope you got your ya yas out yesterday because Lent has started! I did go to church, where do the ashes come from?

    Denny is so cute.

In other news: new cell phone! now I have two. You see, the story is I went to buy a new phone and the nice salesman did quite a bit of searching and told me that my monthly cost would not increase, but I would need to add a second line. Sure enough, I did, I got a big rebate, and now I have two cell phones with two numbers. Crazy! But that's how it goes. So we're a two cell phone family.

Wedding dress shopping ain't for no suckas.

Do you know why people elope? It's because of this store we went to to look for my sister's wedding dress. She's not getting married until late next year but dang it, we went shopping anyway. It's a tiresome activity and we were subjected to COMMUNAL DRESSING ROOMS which ended my desire to try on dresses with her. Across the street was an extension of the store where I tried on 'maids dresses, none of which fit right, but we got an idea of colors and styles that might be flattering. I did try on a veil or two, and, of course, this tiara.

    A Picture Share!

This is Josh Kilmer-Purcell signing my copy of I Am Not Myself These Days. Josh used to do drag under the name Aqua (short for Aquadisiac). She wore fish bowl boobs. It renewed my faith in booksignings, that's for sure! I heard about this book on Lucky Bitch Radio and, apparently, so had the gent in line in front of me! Hooray for Wanda Wisdom!
Oh, and for those hoping to go to the Star Jones Reynolds signing in a couple of weeks it's been cancelled. Lack of interest. Dang! I wanted to know her diet tips!
