    drag-tastic!

Last night's Project Runway was the BEST. EVER. Drag every week. Yes. More Varla Jean! And those of you who haven't, go see Girls Will Be Girls!

Made another run to the bookstore. Still have only slightly less than $250!

Meanwhile, I finshed The Monster of Florence by Douglas Preston and Mario Spezi. It's good enough, it just seems too soon. I know that doesn't make sense considering the last Monster murder took place in the 1980s, but the aftermath appears to be VERY fresh. I'm a sucker for true crime, though.

And I'd like to remind you that when you use the amazon links I get money, money I will use for texts (one of my books will be $78!!!). Even if you don't buy the item once you're there I get a cut of what you buy.

Kids in the Hall May 22 Ryman auditorium

The Kids in the Hall finally made it to Nashville. Hooray! Angi and I have traveled around 24 hours total to see them in other cities but Unfortunately this time things didn't line up for us to go see them together. Instead, we're going in our separate cities, but that's ok.

This was time #3 to see them live. I didn't document time #1 for some reason, but #2 is here (scroll down to 4/20, and ignore my bad grammar in one spot).

Honestly, it was funny, it always is, but not near as funny as Tour of Duty or Same Guys, New Dresses. Was it the lack of Sir Simon Milligan and Hecubus or Running Faggot? I like to think I'm not one of those fickle fans who clings to the recurring characters, but they're funny and one of the reasons for their success. Granted, I'm the first to get annoyed when I mention the Kids and someone says "Oh! I love the Headcrusher!" but ultimately I like the old favorites.

Dave seemed much happier to be there this time, but Scott was rarely in sketches.

Now, here's the recap. Let's see if I can I remember it. I tried to, but then gave up and enjoyed the moment.

I walked into the Ryman and bought my merchandise (i'm a sucker), and as I went into the theatre proper they were playing "Heterosexual Man" by the Odds. If you don't know the connection to the group, try to find the video on youtube. It started with the "Let's rape Kevin!" video which you can easily find online. Not only is it a good introduction, but it prepares you for how much they've aged in the last few years (I know it's inevitable, but it's still a shock considering most of them were so babyfaced when I first started watching). This led to an entrance that was fun and full of energy--very refreshing given the intra-troupe tension that was present at the last show.

The first live, proper sketch is hilarious, involving a hateful baby. Bruce's performance was hardly the focus of this sketch, yet he really stood out. It didn't upstage anyone but was subtle and hilarious.

Next was Buddy Cole. Buddy always pushes the envelope and this time was no different, yet he was still charming and hilarious.

The Gut Spigot, which featured the two salesmen and was full of hysterical physical comedy.

At this point I'm going to lose the timeline. Sorry, but I was having fun and dind't want to be obsessive about the experience.

There was a recurring sketch involving a time machine that started off as only mildly funny, yet paid off hilariously in the end.

Mark performed one of Angi's favorite sketches ever.

Kevin sang a funny song that pretty much sums up his goofy, self deprecating writing style.

Chicken Lady, of course! But not the date sketch that they'd performed the last two times. This time it was the phone sex sketch.

Speaking of recurring characters, Kathy and Cathie met for lunch and talked weight loss and Gavin was visited by Jehovah's Witnesses.

An intermission of sorts featuring the "Car Fuckers" video that you can find online somewhere.

An argument about an imaginary girlfriend.

A strange sketch (which means I believe it was written by Bruce) about dancing during which Scott reminded me why I just love him as a performer.

An odd sketch about two gay couples meeting for dinner.

    Superdrunk!

And end with the Headcrusher once again filming the audience, and then crushing the heads of all Kids (including his own).

Remind me if I missed anything.

Afterwards I ran into Jason who told me to hang on, that they were going to be in the lobby afterwards to mix and mingle. We waited, and after they loaded out through the lobby (why?) they showed up! They all seemed very nice. Yes, Bruce is short. Scott has aged very well. Dave was gracious and friendly and drinking a local beer.

    Forever

I've been watching the State a lot lately. Last month at the New Media Expo I won a $15 iTunes gift card from the kind folks at Technorama and used it to buy the five episodes of The State that are available for purchase.

Oh sure, people complain that they don't have the original music. The thing is, the funny's still there. Plus there's this gem I had totally forgotten about: Forever. Everything about it is fantastic (if you're wondering about David Wain getting taken out, well, it's a running gag through the whole episode), and pay special attention to Ken Marino's closeup; this is the funniest part of the whole thing. Forget Barry and Levon, Doug, and Louie. This is it.

    where have I been?

Yes, I've been scarce lately but actually I haven't. What? I don't know. But for real, I've been blogging over at myspace for some reason, mainly because I get a little personal and kind of want to keep precious things precious. if you're my friend on myspace go right over there. If not, you're welcome to befriend me. I'm nice, I just sometimes like to keep some things a little more quiet.

Short version: I've been having palpitations and dizziness something fierce. I came off gleemonex blue a few days back and it's ROUGH. Or at least I think it's rough. No one's willing to admit it's as a result of coming off the meds, but I kind of think, well, it is a weird coincidence, right? Anyway, lots of tests, lots of prodding. I'm hooked up to a Holter monitor right now.

Hey, so I'm watching this show on PBS about Mormons. Hey, did you know there was a whole series about mormons on PBS? I DID NOT. NONE OF YOU TOLD ME. You know I love mormons, why would you keep this from me? Why the hate? But at least I caught the conclusion. I am watching them talk a little about the history of the lds church and the anti-mormon sentiment across the US in the early days of the church and thinking hm, the backlash was on a larger scale but it's not unlike the backlash against Scientology nowadays. Now, I'm not a Scientologist, I do have my issues with their practices, but it is interesting.

    Sick day

I'm having some issues with dizziness and nausea. I'm pretty sure it's related to snri withdrawal but it was keeping me from working effectively. Anyway.

Denny woke me up at 4am panting heavily, licking at the air, and with his tail pointing directly at the ground. All signs pointed to the poops so I ran him outside where he proceeded to chew on grass and clover, this means I was off and he had an upset stomach. Poor doggie and all that but he could've vomited inside. So I take him in the house and point him to the water bowl where he drinks two bowls of water and the panting, etc stops. Dog only wanted water which annoys the crap out of me, he's got a nice water bowl upstairs that he won't touch because it makes a loud noise. Scaredy cat dog. Anyway, water was all he needed.

Still, it's kind of good that he woke me up when he did, I was having a terrible dream about an armed attack at a roller derby bout. I can usually get myself out of a bad dream but not this time. I thought about just staying up but no, I ended up falling back asleep. Do you know what's on TV at 4am? Full House, that's what.

Oh, and let me talk for a minute about the wonder of Heroes. Sure, it's SUCH an X Men rip off but damn if it isn't fun. Every episode has at least one "holy crap" moment, one breath holding moment, and it's always lots of fun. Where is my Hiro action figure????

    Notes on television

    • It is rumored that Tim Gunn may not return for the next season of Project Runway. it would seem that everyone else--Heidi, Nina, Michael--has signed a contract leaving only Tim as a holdout. Before you call him a money grubbin hose beast remember this: Project Runway is his second job. They come second to the students of Parsons. Because of this he wouldn't be available until may of 07.

    • Prince is headlining the Super Bowl halftime show. This means I'll actually have to watch (DVR?) the Super Bowl, something I haven't done since the Titans were in it.

good times, good mail, cold weather

Have you seen Squidbillies? I heard about it through Sal who is an Unknown Hinson fan. Speaking of, Thursday, January 4, Mercy Lounge. It'll be gooder than hell.

I'm in a lot of pain right now. I don't know what's going on, but it feels like someone's jabbing a blunt dowel into my arm slowly but with a whole heck of a lot of muscle. Additionally I'm having muscle aches in a rather delicate area (hint: it's one of my boobs), an issue that's been going on intermittently since my surgery almost two years ago. I'll be fine, don't you worry.

You know, I almost share too much. almost. But seriously, there's a lot I don't share. Ask Dr Gay, or ask Sally.

So, I got the Dec/Jan Sampler in the mail. I MAY podcast with Dr G later, opening it during the cast. I'm getting a bit impatient so I may just open it and blog about it. Also I'm getting kind of tired.

Speaking of tee shirts, if you requested one during my last offering you will be happy to know that it's been ordered. Yes, I was a little lazy BUT my final has been sent to the professor and so the semester is OVER! Tune in monday if you're really interested in how I did. I'm predicting an A-.

    coming out.

I'm about to admit something really lame. Seriously. This will knock me off the pedestal you've put me on, may even cause me to lose readership.

For many years I religiously watched the Real World on MTV.

I suppose it's the sociological aspect that I love. I am well aware that our opinions are manipulated through editing. I'm also aware of casting to create conflict. In other words, I'm not new to this dog and pony show. Or, perhaps more accurately, this donkey show.

It's been many years though since I've followed a full season. If there's an episode on I'll watch it but I don't retain much and since every episode is the same I never remember if I've seen it before or not.

So this morn I'm watching the newest which I think is in Denver. I think this may be the most nondescript cast ever. Oh, and homely, did I mention that? One of the girls is kind of pretty (I don't know her name, sorry), but everyone else blends in. I think it was pretty early in the season and it seems as though one of the dudes has already hooked up with TWO of the girls. That's just gross. I think I'm getting old because the idea of sex with near strangers or a friends with benefits situation just doesn't sound appealing any longer.

Edited becasue I just rewound the current episode and found that the kind of pretty one is from Nashville. Oh, and do these people have parents? Because the only way I could act this way on a nationally televised program would be if all my family and friends were dead.
